FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How much are the lessons?

Currently Ving Tsun Classes for all students cost £8 per class payable on the night.

  • Do I need any previous Martial Arts experience?

No. You will start your training with other beginners and be closely supervised by the Instructors.

  • Why is Ving Tsun Kung Fu the right Martial Art for me?

Ving Tsun Kung Fu is a complete system, dealing with all possible ranges of a fight; kicks, punches, knees and elbows, locks or throws and anti-ground fighting. We also include traditional Ving Tsun Knives and Long Pole and also weapons awareness. You will not be taught to beat an attacker using greater force, instead using the strength of an opponent against them. You will only be taught techniques in class that are practical, easy to apply, and easy to remember.

  • Can I try it before I decide to join the Club?

Of course! You may book a Induction Class or enrol and attend one of our classes before you decide to join us. After this you will need to become a member in order to continue training, have third party insurance and be able to take the Ving Tsun gradings.

  • How do I start? Do I just turn up at a class?

You may just turn up at one of our classes but it helps us if you register for class enrolment before attending your first class.

  • What will I learn in my first lesson?

You will be given some background information about the art of Ving Tsun Kung-Fu, be introduced to some of our basic fighting concepts and principles, learn two basic stances, and start learning how to use the main weapon of our Kung Fu system, the 'straight-line punch'. If time permits you will be shown a simple street 'Self-Defence' application.

  • What should I wear to the first class?

Just turn up with a plain white T-Shirt, black sports pants and training shoes! Uniform costs in our club are kept to a minimum. We have Club T-Shirts for sale at £20 which you can purchase later after joining the Club. Kung Fu trousers and other training equipment are available which we offer on our website but are not a necessity.

  • How long will it take to learn how to defend myself?

We believe that we can offer you the fastest way to learn effective Self-Defence because Ving Tsun is a practical fighting art, not a sport. Every move you will learn in class has a practical application; in many other styles people can often spend a long time learning moves that they cannot apply when fighting. You will learn useful techniques that can be applied from your first class, and you can expect to be able to deal with the majority of unarmed attacks in as little as 6 to 12 months.

  • How long will it take me to get my Black Belt?

In Ving Tsun Kung-Fu we do not wear belts, but the equivalent would be the Technician grade that follows the 12 student grades. Obviously it depends on how often you train but a committed student could reach this level in 3-4 years.

  • Is it just about fighting?

No! In fact the true martial artist hopes never to have to apply their skills; the goal is becoming a more relaxed, healthier and self-confident person. Other benefits from your training include greater awareness, fitness, flexibility and the enjoyment of training with other club members with the same goals.

  • Will I get injured?

We always place attention on student safety. The goal in training is for self-improvement and also to assist your partner in perfecting their techniques, not to compete against them. Students can practice with their partner up to the level of contact that they are comfortable with, and if you choose to 'reality test' your techniques under more pressure, this will always be done in a safe controlled environment. With any contact sport the risk of injury is always there, but if you train with care and respect your training partner accidents should not happen.

  • Sounds good to me! What have I got to lose?

Nothing! You will learn a great deal in your first lesson and will receive individual attention from the Instructor. You will not be struggling to follow what the other students are doing as part of a big group. Even if you decide that Ving Tsun Kung-Fu is not what you are lookingfor then you may still take away something valuable from the first lesson that you could apply in real life.
